RRRD049 Snapshot: Minimising off-farm movement of nitrogen in the north Queensland banana industry

RRRD049-Project-Snapshot-208

The aim of this project is to determine nitrogen leaching losses from current best existing technology and to research new strategies to further reduce nitrogen losses off-farm. The project will support the north Queensland banana industry to implement techniques to reduce nitrogen losses to the environment by providing direct input to producer groups.

A field trial has been established, lysimeters and instrumentation installed and working well and the crop is looking impressively uniform. Soil samples and leachates have been collected and the results are now being analysed. Early results showed no obvious differences between treatments which was expected. (Treatment differences are not expected without leaching due to wet season rainfall). All treatments had leaf nitrogen levels in the optimum range.
